The Amherst Town Library presents, “Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits: The Lunatic, the Lover, and the Poet,” on Tuesday, March 15th at 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Library. Professional actor Richard Clark, who appeared at the Amherst Town Library before as Mark Twain, returns (by popular demand) in this living history presentation that brings Shakespeare to life! Come and share some of the most memorable moments in dramatic literature. Let your imagination sally forth with fabled kings as they ‘mount barb’d steeds to fright the souls of fearsome adversaries.’ Eavesdrop on the intimate murmurings of Romeo, the obsessive passions of Anthony and Cleopatra, the demented musings of King Richard as he broods over the love he will never have…Twelve different characters, twenty five monologues and soliloquies from his most famous plays. Laugh with the fools, cry with the afflicted, dream with the poets. Beware the possessed! Don’t miss the essence of the world’s greatest wordsmith.

As part of the Amherst Town Library’s March adult series called Time Travel: Back to the Future, Nancy Baker presents, “Celebrating March…The Equinox: Expectations and Equilibrium” on Wednesday, March 16th at 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in the Johnson Meeting Room. March is the month of expectation, when there is as much light as darkness and a sense that life is shifting from one expectation to another.

Courtesy of Amherst Town Library

In Lewis Carroll’s time, things were “mad as a March Hare” at this time of year, and it is the season of March madness in this country. This time of uncertainty and anticipation has always been a part of our folklore, literature and meaning making. In this program we will explore March as a month, a surname, a political and geographic definition, and a musical expression. We’ll look at poems and paintings, listen to some music, learn about some famous events that happened in March, and generally ponder what the spring equinox has contributed to our collective consciousness. The format is an interactive exploration of philosophy, art, literature, mythology and music. No previous study of any of the disciplines is expected, and all in-class and follow-up materials are provided.

Presenter Nancy Baker, one of the Founding Faculty at Souhegan High School, was runner up as New Hampshire Teacher of the Year in 2004. During her time at the school, Nancy taught Mythology, History of Ideas, Philosophy, Ancient History and Latin. A Classical Languages major at Harpur College, SUNY at Binghamton, Nancy continued graduate work in Egyptology at Brown University. She also worked in the Research Department at Colonial Williamsburg, was Director of Research at the Historic Annapolis Foundation, and is the author of several articles on early Annapolis, Maryland, silversmiths in the 18th century, and colonial ship chandlery.

The event is free and open to the public. You can register by calling 673-2288, emailing library@amherst.lib.nh.us or by visiting our website at www.amherst.lib.nh.us and registering online by selecting “Calendar of Events.”

March begins a new series for adults at the Amherst Town Library entitled Time Travel: Back to the Future. In the first program of the month, R.P. Hale presents “The 2012 Fraud: Misreading the Maya and their Calendars” on Tuesday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m. How many Ends of the World have you lived in so far? The hysteria surrounding 2012 turns out to be the usual fraud and misrepresentation aimed at separating you from your money, and based on falsehoods about the Maya Calendars. Explore the history of the Apocalypse – mankind’s second oldest story – along with what the Maya Calendars are and how they work. Then, take a look at what the frauds and fearmongers say and “debunk” them yourselves. R.P. Hale, of Aztec heritage himself, presents a fully illustrated and participatory program with a surprising conclusion in this New Hampshire Humanities Council sponsored program.

Creative Commons

R.P. Hale holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Arizona and is an interdisciplinary artist, craftsman, musician and historian. He is a senior astronomy education staffer with the McAuliffe-Shepherd Discovery Center in Concord. and he is an active participating scholar in Mesoamerican history, astronomy, archaeoastronomy, the Náhuatl (Aztec) language and particularly the evolution, workings, and astronomical basis of the Maya and Aztec calendars. Recognized by the Smithsonian Institute as one of this country’s top harpsichord makers, he is also a concert harpsichordist.

Hope you can join us for this first of the March series programs. You are also invited to join us for the rest of the Time Travel: Back to the Future series at the Amherst Town Library: “Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits: The Lunatic, the Lover, and the Poet—a living history presentation” on Tuesday, March 15th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.; “Celebrating March…The Equinox: Expectations and Equilibrium” on Wednesday, March 16th from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.; “Brainstorming: Rory Raven, Mentalist and Mindbender” on Tuesday, March 22nd from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.; “Ty Burr, Boston Globe Film Critic presents: Does Film have a Future?” on Wednesday, March 23rd from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.; and, “Lafayette and the Farewell Tour: The American Idol” on Tuesday, March 29th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

This event and all the events in the series are free and open to the public. The Amherst Town Library is grateful to the New Hampshire Humanities Council for providing funding to make this program possible. Please register for this event and all the upcoming year’s events by calling 673-2288, emailing library@amherst.lib.nh.us or by visiting our website at www.amherst.lib.nh.us and selecting “Calendar of Events.”

According to WMUR, “the girl confided in another student that she was having some problems and that she brought a handgun to school.”

Souhegan High School courtesy google.com

Principal Jon Ingram said the classmate spoke to an adult at the school who spoke to the student who was “in a difficult situation”. The school’s resource officer was also involved and was able to secure the surrendered weapon.

The student was turned over to police who was escorted out of the building. The school was not put in lockdown because the situation was resolved so quickly, according to Ingram. However a letter was sent home to parents.

“I think what most impressed me about our school community was the fact that No. 1, a student felt comfortable and had the courage to come forward, and No. 2, that there were enough adults to get to that student quickly and promptly,” he said.

Ingram also stated that possible disciplinary action is being considered.

Purgatory Falls is a rocky gorge on the boundary of Mont Vernon and Lyndeborough. It is a deep ravine more than a half a mile in length with three separate waterfalls through which Black Brook runs. Today the upper falls are protected by 30 acres of conservation land owned by the town of Mont Vernon. There is an established trail system frequently used for hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and horseback riding.

“Many thanks to the Historical Society for loaning the House this piece to represent a cherished landmark of my district. I am pleased that this photo will hang in my office for my colleagues and the public to enjoy and that a piece of Mont Vernon will be represented as potential presidential candidates visit the House as we continue to promote and celebrate our first in the nation primary,” said O’Brien.

In attendance was a group of Mont Vernon residents as well as the curator of the Mont Vernon Museum. The photograph will be displayed in O’Brien’s office for the duration of his term as House Speaker.
